Contribution:

Dr Melanie Lau

Patient data: 74-year-old Male

Presentation: Follow up calcified pleural plaques

Commentary: Pleural calcification missed on original CT calcium scoring

Follow up CT states "calcified pleural plaques, in keeping with previous asbestos exposure"

No history in background to state previous asbestos exposure or known plaques.

Current CT shows a large volume pleural calcification of relatively uniform thickness of the dependent right lung. No left pleural calcification.

No asbestosis.

Sheet-like rather than plaque-like.

Note slightly reduced lung volume.

Diagnosis:

Fibrothorax - likely from previous pleural infection.

Points of Note:

Asbestos plaques are usually bilateral and plaque-like

May have asbestosis

May have round atelectasis

Check for history of exposure
